The UK National Screening Committee: Positive Recommendations

(HPV) testing as the first stage in the cervical screening programme

The minutes of the most recent National Screening Committee are released today. This body gives recommendations to ministers about the screening programmes within the UK, both cancer and non-cancer. The minutes indicate that the NSC has recomended that the adoption of primary HPV testing within cervical screening programmes. This is obviously a major news announcement. Any implementation of this would have a major impact across the UK. Currently this is only a recommendation by the NSC to Ministers but if adopted by the respective UK governments it would need a detailed implementation plan. Any plans for this are yet to be worked out but the BAC will keep members up to date as and when new information is available.
