Guidance outlining the role of biomedical scientists within the provision of non-gynaecological cytology services.

The British Association for Cytopathology has issued guidance outlining the role of biomedical scientists within the provision of non-gynaecological cytology services.



The statement, issued jointly with the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), and endorsed by both, addresses changes in the non-gynaecological cytology service and will help all those involved in the provision of non-gynaecological cytology

The updated guidance addresses areas including; 

  • sample preparation, 
  • reporting, 
  • ancillary testing, 
  • sample assessment for adequacy for reporting, 
  • multi-disciplinary team meetings,
  • clinical scientists in cytology, and
  • continuing education/assessment/appraisal.
