Many BAC members will remember Eileen Hewer who was president of the NAC from 1998 to 2001. Eileen was pivotal to the introduction of the Advanced Practitioner and a pioneer in training and education in cytology.
Sue Vryenhoef met with Eileen regularly since she returned from New Zealand and she was shocked to discover 18 months ago that she had widespread metastatic disease following her breast cancer 16 years previously. The last 2 months have been very difficult and Eileen went into a hospice a week ago on the Friday hoping to stabilise and achieve better pain relief ; it was not to be and she passed away with her husband, Richard and family by her side.
Eileen had a long career in Cytology in Huddersfield, Sheffield and finally New Zealand working in the lab, training school and quality assurance.
Many of us have a lot to thank Eileen for, without her and Jane Johnson we would not have Consultant BMS roles. They were responsible for instigating the AP exam and ensuring that the IBMS and the Royal College worked together to get the role established.
Eileen will be missed terribly and many of you will mourn her passing.
Eileen's funeral will be held on Friday November 4th at 10am. Location: Crematorium, Woodhouse Lane, Redhill, Telford. TF2 9NJ followed by a wake (food) at The Huntsman (Wellington Road, Little Wenlock, Telford, TF6 5BH.
Eileen requested bright clothing.
Eileen had discussed that she would like donations to https://www.justgiving.com/oswestry-bone-cancer-centre rather than flowers. She was treated at Oswestry and the care and treatment she received was outstanding.
